What we should remember on 9/11

Overview: Never forget…

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack that took the lives of nearly 3000 Americans on that day and marked the beginning of era that changed all our lives. While we look back and remember all those who have died on that fateful day, we also honor all those who have fallen in the War on Terror. We remember all the heroes that fight everyday to making sure we sleep soundly at night and continue to have all the freedoms that we have today.

Sometimes I think we take our lives for granted everyday. We wake up everyday, drive to work, put in 8 hours, and drive home, all the while complaining about how early we have to wake up, how long we sit in traffic, how much people at work irritate you, and how the old lady driving her car on the highway was going to slow for the fast lane as you sped home. We then sit home watching trivial shows about vampires or some housewives somewhere or some people from Staten Island who hang out by the shore in New Jersey. We never realize that everyday, brave people have little or no sleep while fighting through the night, sitting in cramped stations, fighting against people who want to kill them, and while they may not have a little ‘ol lady driving 20 mph in the fast lane, they have to worry about the road blowing up under them from a I.E.D.

I also think about how I am so privileged we are to be in this country. How lucky we are to have the freedom to voice our opinions without fear of our Government. How lucky we are to believe in any God that we choose to, or none at all. We live in a country that gives anybody the opportunity to be as successful as they strive to be. Our country may not be perfect but at least our country lets us say that without fear of oppression.. without fear of being silenced.. without fear of not being heard. Our freedoms are such that we have the freedom to disagree to the same military that helps fight to keep that same freedom.

I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel on this day, but all I know is that I feel lucky. Even now as I’m listening to South Park on the TV as I write this article on my laptop, I remember how lucky I am to enjoy these freedoms and lucky to have people fighting everyday so that I can keep it. I honor the lives that have been lost just so that we remember how fragile our freedoms are when forget we have them. On 9/11, I commemorate our great nation, the privileges we have, and memories of all those who shared the same ideal.

America, I salute you.
